Retrofitting with Rotamix mixing technology proves a success for sewage treatment plant in Australia

A new Vaughan Rotamix process mixing system has been successfully retrofitted into an existing 17.5 metre diameter, 1.2 million litre capacity digester at the Maroochy Sewage Treatment Plant, Queensland, Australia. The Rotamix package was supplied to the Maroochy Alliance Joint Venture by Pump Systems Ltd after providing a successful CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model of the proposed system.

All Rotamix designs are supported by CFD analysis, either by standard modeled geometries, or by using customised models that are individualised to meet specific application parameters on a consultation basis. The software used at Vaughan Co., Inc. for analysis is among the top programs available in the world for this type of detailed computer flow modeling work, which essentially breaks down the fluid volume into hundreds of thousands of volume elements for analysis.

At the Maroochy site, all existing gas mixing equipment and pipework was removed, and two Vaughan Rotamix double nozzle assemblies were then installed inside the floor of the digester. Two 30 kW model HE8N10 horizontal end suction Vaughan Chopper Pumps (duty & standby) were installed just outside the digester to perform as the mixing pumps.

Vaughan Rotamix provides high efficiency mixing at low levels for sludge blending system

Pump Systems Ltd have recently completed a sludge tank blending project with the installation of three Rotamix sludge tank mixing systems at the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant, Manukau City, Auckland. The revolutionary sludge tank mixing system uses three dual sets of powerful floor mounted nozzles to mix a blend of WWTP sludge's and solids up to 6% inside three 8 to 10 m diameter sludge tanks.

The unique flow pattern created by the fixed floor nozzles eliminates dead spots, reduces energy requirements and virtually eliminates solids settling out inside the tank. The big advantage is that there are no moving parts inside the sludge tank, therefore the sludge tank blending systems are virtually maintenance free.

Each sludge tank blending system uses an HE series horizontal end suction Vaughan Chopper Pump which is specially designed to handle solids laden sludges containing fibres and hair. The heavy duty Vaughan Chopper Pump preconditions the sludge which avoids clogging of the floor mounted nozzles and also stops the problem of fine fibres and hair reweaving into small clumps, which can cause a build up of solids on the surface of the sludge and the floor of the tank.

Innovative Rotamix mixing design supplied to West Camden for sludge flow balance tanks

In 2006, Pump Systems Ltd supplied two Rotamix process mixing systems for an upgrade project at West Camden WWTP in Sydney, Australia. The mixing systems were designed to mix two identical 10 metre diameter concrete digester sludge flow balancing tanks containing undigested Thickened Waste Activated Sludge (TWAS). Innovative through-the-wall style Rotamix nozzles were used to eliminate the need for internal pipe work and to provide higher mixing efficiency over a range of levels.

Each sludge tank at the plant is fitted with two single Rotamix mixing nozzles, located on opposite sides of the tank and each with its own Vaughan end suction mixing chopper pump. This design was chosen so that there would always be a duty pump and mixing nozzle available if one was stopped for maintenance. The new compact style through-the-wall nozzles from Vaughan offer all of the same features as standard floor mounted nozzles assemblies, and are hardened and glass lined to resist wear when handling wastewater treatment plant sludge.
